Special Edition: Terrorist Plot Foiled in Great Britain

A plot with recently stopped by British authorities to blow up aircraft flying to the U.S. with liquid explosive. 21 men where arrested though it is believed there are other suspects still at large. The U.S. government temporarily banned all liquids from flights with the exception of medicines (prescription medicine with passengerâs name on bottle) and baby formula. Passengers are asked to pack light and to be patient while waiting in longer security lines.

Banned Items Include

• All beverages, this includes beverages purchased in the terminal past the security screening area

• Toothpaste

• Cheney Accidentally Shoots Fellow Hunter. Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets. Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was "alert and doing fine" in a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday after he was shot by Cheney on a ranch in south Texas, said Katharine Armstrong, the property's owner. He was in stable condition Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi. Armstrong in an interview with The Associated Press said Whittington, 78, was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest during the incident which occurred late afternoon on Saturday. Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shoot at a covey of quail. Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and discovered a second covey. Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said. "The vice president didn't see him, The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good." Armstrong, said Whittington was bleeding and Cheney was very apologetic. "It broke the skin," she said of the shotgun pellets. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that." "This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong. Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president met with Whittington and his wife at the hospital on Sunday. Cheney "was pleased to see that he's doing fine and in good spirits," she said.

• Biggest Winter Olympics ever in Turin. The Turin Games brings together a record 2,500 athletes (2,399 in Salt Lake City 2002) from 82 countries (77) who will compete in 84 (78) disciplines in Turin and the mountain venues nearby. The event will be the most televized Winter Olympics ever with some 3.2 billion people in 200 countries and territories able to watch the snow and ice Games, including such areas the sub-Sahara, Laos, Iraq and North Vietnam. In Turin, not quite three quarters of the 1 million tickets have been sold for the competition, but organizers remain upbeat, true to the Olympic motto 'Passion Comes Alive'. Doping is very much on the agenda in Turin, not only with a record 1,200 tests conducted (up 72 per cent from 2002), but also due to a compromise reached only a few days ago between the IOC and the Italian government. The IOC sees itself as the only doping authority for athletes, but the Italian state also has tight anti-doping laws. Under the agreement, the IOC alone will conduct the tests but all athletes who test positive will be subject to Italian law - without doping raids by police in the athletes village. Police will rather aim to guarantee security in a massive 15,000 personnel security operation which also includes the armed forces and AWACS surveillance planes from NATO. Organizers are prepared for terrorists but are more concerned about anarchists and anti-globalization activists.

  
  

• Two Koreas march together at Winter Olympics. Athletes from South and North Korea marched together in a show of unity at the opening ceremony. South Korea speed skater Bora Lee joined with Democratic People's Republic of Korea's figure skater Han Jong-In as they entered the Stadio Olimpico for the ceremony. The joint march was the first of its kind at a Winter Olympics. Ties between the two countries have warmed since a peace summit between their leaders in 2000. In line with tradition, Greece was the first nation to appear in the stadium led by cross country skiier Fafalis Eleftherios with Lee and Han the 22nd and 23rd of the 80 countries represented.

  
  

• Doping threatens to tarnish Games opening. Doping threatened to taint the opening of the Winter Olympics on Friday as athletes and dignitaries prepared for an inaugural ceremony launching two weeks of sport. An Italian official said several Winter Olympics athletes had tested positive for doping in pre-Games drugs checks. Giovanni Zotta, who is an Italian representative on the IOC's anti-doping commission, said preliminary tests by the IOC on 98 athletes had found the banned substance Erythropoietin (EPO) in several athletes. "So far there have been cases of EPO in several athletes but it must be confirmed," Zotta told Reuters, declining to give any athletes' names or numbers involved. He said subsequent tests were needed to confirm initial results. EPO boosts the number of red blood cells which carry oxygen and improves stamina. In an apparent separate development that enraged the German team, eight Nordic skiers were suspended for five days for high red cell counts. But officials said the bans were a health measure, not a doping-related sanction.

• Russia to Invite Hamas for Moscow Talks. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he would invite Hamas leaders to the Kremlin for talks that could focus on persuading the Palestinian group to renounce violence. During a visit to Madrid, Spain, he pointed out that Russia does not share the view widely held in the West that Hamas is a terrorist organization. A Hamas leader was later quoted as saying he would be delighted to accept the invitation. Asked about the invitation, Russia's U.N. Ambassador Andrey Denisov said it was merely a recognition of Hamas's election victory last month. A State Department spokesman in Washington reacted cautiously to the Russian move. Spokesman Sean Mc Cormack was quoted as saying the United States was asking for clarification from Moscow as to what their intentions are, but he carefully avoided criticizing the Putin invitation.

  
  
  

• Rice talks to Russian foreign minister over Hamas Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice won assurances from Russia on Friday that Moscow would send a firm message to Hamas that the militant group must change if it wants world support, the State Department said. Rice telephoned Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday to discuss Moscow's surprise plans to invite Palestinian election winner Hamas for talks, a move that irked Washington and was not discussed when Rice met Lavrov in London last week. The United States classifies Hamas as a terrorist body and has ruled out any direct contact until the militant group renounces violence, disarms militants and recognizes Israel. France, in an apparent break with the United States, has signaled support for the Russian meeting. Russia had not yet set a date for a meeting.

  
  

• Michelle Kwan Drops Out of Olympic Games. After a horrible practice session and a groin injury Kwan decided that she should go home. "I've learned it's not about the gold," Kwan said. "It's about the spirit of the Olympics. I have no regrets. I tried my hardest and if I don't win the gold, it's OK I'll be happy." She has won five world championships, nine national championships, and silver and bronze Olympic medals.

• Coke drops Kwan; Visa sticks with her. Michelle Kwan's withdrawal from the Winter Olympics has forced two major television advertisers who were featuring the figure skater in their campaigns to reevaluate their plans. Coca-Cola Co. has decided not to go ahead with one of its two ads that reference Kwan, while Visa USA is sticking with her. A series of Coke ads that feature rabid fans rooting on their favourite athletes included one where they were rooting for Kwan. The skater herself is not seen in the ad. "Given that it's cheering her on to win, hopefully, and she is not competing, we didn't think the ad was still relevant," said Susan McDermott, a spokeswoman for the soft drink company, yesterday. Coke will simply substitute ads featuring other athletes in the spots set aside for Kwan. A 15-second Visa ad set to debut on NBC Monday night features footage of Kwan skating, illustrating the theme of "life takes poetry," said Susanne Lyons, chief marketing officer, Visa USA.

The News:

• Cartoon crisis deepens as Muslim fury spreads. A wave of Muslim fury spread across the Middle East and Asia over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad on this week as leaders struggled to contain a deepening diplomatic crisis between Europe and the Muslim world. The dispute began when the paper, Jyllands-Posten, last September published 12 caricatures of the prophet Mohammed, depicting him as a stereotypical Islamic terrorist. Ten Muslim ambassadors wrote a joint letter to Prime Minister asking him to take a stance on the issue, which he refused to do. He said Denmark had a free and independent press and refused to intervene. The newspaper has already apologized for, as it has said, wounding the sensitivities of Muslims, but at the same time maintaining its right to print what it likes. In Iran, a crowd pelted the Danish embassy in Tehran with petrol bombs and stones. Iran cut trade ties with Denmark when the satirical images were first published. In protest, Iran's best-selling newspaper on Tuesday launched a competition to find the best Holocaust cartoon. The daily paper Hamshahri said the contest was designed to test the boundaries of free speech, the reason put forward by European newspapers for publishing the cartoons of Mohammad. After rioters set Danish embasses ablaze in Syria and Lebanon over the weekend, the EU presidency issued a strongly worded warning to 19 countries across the Middle East that they are obliged to protect EU embasses. On Tuesday when Afghan police opened fire on a crowd, enraged by the cartoons, which tried to storm a NATO peacekeeping base housing Norwegian troops, while across the border in Pakistan, 10,000 people rallied. At least six people have now been killed in protests in Somalia, Lebanon and Afghanistan. Volatile rallies have swept across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Militants in Iraq have called for the seizure and killing of Danes and the boycott of Danish goods. In London, there were placards demanding the beheading of those who insulted Islam. Further protests erupted on Tuesday in Egypt, Yemen, Djibouti, Gaza and Azerbaijan, while Croatia became the latest country where a newspaper printed the cartoons, one of which depicts the Prophet wearing a turban resembling a fizzing bomb. The cartoons have appeared in papers in Australia, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Fiji, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, United States, Ukraine and Yemen. • Now Australia is having trouble over the cartoons. The newspapers that opted not to publish the cartoons offensive to Muslims that triggered riots in the Middle East should also have avoided publishing material that deeply offended Christians, says Peter Costello, MP, Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Australia. In a reference to the controversial Andres Serrano photograph Piss Christ, Mr Costello said he did not even want to use the name. "It was absolutely offensive to Christians and the media told us that they had every right to do it and they were going to do it and they did it quite a bit and I think Christians found that offensive," he told radio program in Australia. "Now, you know, the newspapers could have considered their feelings and I think you should consider the feelings of people before you publish these things, but if you don't and they are offended, it still doesn't justify a riot. And Christians didn't have a riot, you know, they voiced their protest and just as the newspapers have the right of free speech to publish these things, so you have the right of free speech to condemn it." Labor leader Kim Beazley said it was extremely unwise of Brisbane's Courier-Mail to publish one of the cartoons. "It's an offensive cartoon and it shouldn't be printed," he said. • Egyptian government didn't learn of ferry sinking for hours. The owners of a Red Sea ferry that sank, drowning about 1,000 people, did not inform the Egyptian government until nearly six hours after the disaster, a presidential spokesperson said Tuesday. The ferry sank on Friday, Febuary 3rd, after a fire broke out while it was travelling across the Red Sea from Saudi Arabia to Egypt. About 1,400 passengers were on board at the time, but only about 422 people were rescued. Officials said that about 250 bodies had been recovered by late Tuesday afternoon. The government has come under attack from the victims' families and critics who question why it took hours after the ferry sank at about 2 a.m. local time before the rescue operation got into full swing. Government officials report that they first heard that the vessel was in trouble at 7 a.m. on Friday. "What really happened was that the port authority was first informed at 7 a.m. by the ship's owners that they had lost contact with the ferry, Forty-five minutes later, the company told port officials the ship may have sunk." Told officials. Questions have also been raised about whether the vessel was seaworthy, with accusations that corrupt government officials had conducted inadequate inspections of the ferry. The government has promised to pay $5,200 US to the family of each victim, with survivors of the disaster getting half that amount. The ferry company has offered $26,000 US to each victim. • US to expel Venezuelan diplomat. The United States has ordered the expulsion of a senior Venezuelan envoy in a tit-for-tat move that has drawn criticism from Caracas. On Thursday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced the expulsion of a US naval attaché for spying - a charge the US described as "baseless". Venezuela attacked the US decision to expel its diplomat on Friday as "disproportionate and incongruous". The expulsions take the animosity between Venezuela and the US to a new level. Washington is deeply opposed to the government of Mr Chavez, who is a vocal critic of the US. The US has expressed concerns about Venezuelan democracy under Mr Chavez and about the effect of his government's military purchases on regional stability. Washington has tried to block his attempts to buy military equipment that contain American technology. Earlier this week, US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld likened Mr Chavez to Adolf Hitler, describing both as leaders who were "elected legally and then consolidated power". Venezuelan Vice-President Jose Rangel responded on Friday by describing US President George W Bush as the "North American Hitler" and his defence secretary as a "delinquent" and "arms dealer".

• Ex-Costa Rica president leads polls. Former Costa Rican leader Oscar Arias held a slight lead Monday with more than three quarters of the ballots counted from the presidential election. The 65-year-old Arias had 40.8 percent of the vote while his main rival Otton Solis had 40.1 percent. Pre-election election polls showed that Arias was the favorite in Sunday's election. During his previous term -- 1986-90 -- Arias won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end regional conflicts. Read the Washington Times article.

• Chirac tricked by Canadian hoax. French President Jacques Chirac thought he had taken a call on Friday from the new Canadian prime minister - but found himself the victim of a radio hoax. The pair of hoaxers, known as the Masked Avengers, rang the Elysee Palace from their base in Montreal. Mr Chirac congratulated the caller he thought was Conservative leader Stephen Harper on winning Monday's election. • Cutting fat did not reduce disease risk in older women. Women who switched to a low-fat diet later in life did not see a reduced risk of breast cancer, colorectal cancer or heart disease, according to recent studies. Simply cutting the total fat in the diet generally didn't help reduce the risk of cancer or heart disease among these women, according to the studies in the Feb. 8 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. But researchers say older women shouldn't give up trying to eat healthy. They say the focus should be on reducing saturated fats and trans fats found in processed foods, meat and some dairy products. • Canada Conservatives win Federal Election. Canada's prime minister-elect, Stephen Harper, has promised to honor campaign promises of change and reform, after 12 years of Liberal rule. Mr. Harper's Conservatives won Canada's general election, but will have to seek allies in parliament after failing to win an overall majority. Mr Harper aims to cut taxes, tackle corruption and clamp down on crime. Sounds like what every Politican says. But correspondents say the failure to score a major victory may temper the authority of Mr Harper's government. Harper is planning a smaller cabinet than Paul Martin's and has warned Conservative veterans they may have to make way for new MPs from Quebec and Ontario in his minority government. While no date has been set for the handover of power, a new government is usually sworn in 10 to 14 days after the electoral defeat of its predecessor. For more, click here and here.
  

• Trapped miners rescued. All 72 trapped Saskatchewan miners were brought safely to the surface early Monday after spending more than 30 hours cut off underground by fire and smoke. The potash miners were trapped when fire broke out in polyethylene piping nearly a kilometer underground at about 3 a.m. local time Sunday. When toxic smoke began to fill the tunnels, the 72 miners took refuge in large oxygenated rooms. Waiting in the emergency rooms, they had access to food, water and blankets but were forced to use the light of their headlamps to see, rescue workers said. Canada and Russia are the world's two leading producers of potash (potassium chloride), which is used in fertilizer. • Iran blocks BBC Persian website. The Iranian authorities have started to block the BBC's Persian language internet site, for the first time. The BBC says the level of traffic to the site from within Iran has dropped sharply over the last few days. No official explanation has been given. The BBC has expressed concern at the action, saying it deprives many Iranians of a trusted source of news. The BBC said it would be approaching the Iranian government at an official level about re-instating access. It is not clear if the filtering will be permanent, but many websites are routinely blocked in Iran, the BBC reports. • Iran and Russia in nuclear talks. Iran and Russia began talks on Saturday regarding a Russian-proposed plan to jointly enrich uranium, news agencies reported. In December, Russia proposed that the two countries establish a joint venture in Russia to enrich uranium for Iran. While Iran has not rejected the proposal outright, Tehran has said the proposal needs clarification. The US and the EU both support the Russian proposal, viewing it as a way to regulate Iran's nuclear activities. The US and the EU suspect Iran is seeking to develop an atomic bomb, though there is no concrete evidence of such plans. Next week, the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, is to discuss whether to refer Iran to the UN Security Council, which has the power to impose sanctions. Iran insists its nuclear program is strictly geared towards domestic nuclear power. For more, click here and here.

• London to host start of 2007 Tour. The 2007 Tour de France will begin in London, Mayor Ken Livingstone announced last week. It is the third time the Tour has visited England but the first time it has ventured into the capital. London will host two stages, the first stage will be in the city center on July 7th with the second stage starting in London before heading south through Kent. The route has yet to be finalized but landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square will feature. Read it here.

The News:

• London Whale. The small 20 foot Northern bottlenose whale that swam 40 miles up the Thames river to central London on Friday died during a rescue attempt. The whale that rescuers were carrying out to sea from the River Thames died Saturday, according to the London Port Authority. Before the rescue attempt -- in which a crane was used to lift the whale out of the river in a yellow raft and onto a barge -- the whale had been swimming toward the wider part of the estuary. But it was still hours from open water. A veterinarian involved with the rescue operation said the whale was convulsing before it died, and the doctor had considered euthanizing it. An autopsy is scheduled. Officials had examined the whale to determine if it was healthy enough to endure the rescue attempt and decided they were "cautiously optimistic" about saving the mammal's life. The whale swam up River Thames to central London. The first time since such records where started in 1913. Experts think the whale had been following fish upstream and had become disorientated. • New Orleans Major Opens His Mouth. Mayor Ray Nagin said last Monday in a Martin Luther King Day speech that God wants New Orleans to be a majority-black city. "It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans -- the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans." He also said that God was punishing America through Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other storms. "Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," said Nagin. He has since apologized for his comments. • Sydney Opera House in Trouble. The Opera House needs an estimated $700 million in repairs. Concerns were raised about the condition of the orchestra pit, the air-conditioning system and handicapped accessibility. The exterior also needs work from people regularly taking the white tiles for souvenirs. The State Government has allocated $70 million for the refurbishment of the interior. The Opera House has been nominated as a world heritage site. A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a specific site (such as a forest, mountain range, lake, desert, building, complex, or city) that has been nominated for the international World Heritage Program. The programm aims to catalogue, name, and preserve sites of outstanding importance, either cultural or natural, to the common heritage of humankind. For more see the Sydney Morning Herald.
  

• Iraqi Shias win election victory. Iraq's Shia-led United Iraqi Alliance has won the country's parliamentary elections, but failed to obtain an absolute majority. The alliance took 128 of the 275 seats - 10 short of an outright majority. Kurdish parties have 53 seats and the main Sunni Arab bloc 44. The Shias will now be expected to form a coalition government. A number of Sunni politicians have alleged fraud, and international observers criticised irregularities. • Time Warner Plans to Sell 5% of AOL to Google. Time Warner has agreed to sell a 5 percent stake in America Online to Google for $1 billion as part of an expanded partnership between AOL, once the dominant company on the Internet, and Google, the current online king. While the deal terms are largely set, it will not be final until it is ratified by the Time Warner board on Tuesday, according to an executive who was briefed on the negotiations. • U2 to climb Sydney Harbour bridge. Irish super group U2 is planning to take time out of the Australian leg of their Vertigo World Tour, to climb Sydney's famous Harbour Bridge. The News

• US Torture Ban, from BBC News, Chicago Tribune, the Times Herald-Record, and more from the Chicago Tribune. (US) Congress passed Senator John McCain's torture ban bill this week. The measure will ban cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of prisoners (the Senate voted 90-9 in favor of the amendment. In the House, lawmakers voted 308-122). President Bush at first threatened to veto the legislation but now he is supporting the bill. Bush said he and Senator McCain shared a common objective "to make it clear to the world that this government does not torture." A member of the House of Representatives, John Murtha, said torture would not help the US win the hearts and minds of people it was used against, and Congress was obliged to speak out. The bill does not prevent harsh treatment of terrorism suspects who knows of an imminent attack.

• TSA shortens restriction list, from the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram and The Providence Journal. As of Thursday, December 22, 2005 US airport security shortens the list of banned objects to allow scissors and blades under 4 inches. Tools under 7 inches will be allowed, though not hammers, saws and lighters or other "potentially deadly instruments." Which is dumb, in the right hands a shoestring can be deathly but I think the idea of somebody killing every passenger in a plane with a small pocket knife should be left to the plots of Hollywood movies. Airport screeners will also change their MO for inspecting travelers and their belongings with more emphasis on bomb detection. It is suppose to be more random. The idea is to keep potential terrorists guessing and minimize the amount of time spent screening people who don't seem to be threats. Concerns are that it WILL increase the wait at airports. Airport spokesmen suggest you arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and two hours before an international trip.

• New York Transit strike, still on-going, from the Canadian National Post. Commuters walked through the cold, rode bicycles, roller-skated and shared cabs this week as the New York transit workers when on strike. This is the first New York transit strike in over 25 years. State Justice Theodore Jones leveled a $1 million-a-day fine against the Transport Workers Union for violating a state law that bars public employees from going on strike. "This is a very, very sad day in the history of labor relations for New York City," the judge said in imposing the fine.

The News

• Bush talks tough on immigration, from the Baltimore Sun. President Bush launched a new push to crack down on illegal immigration from Mexico, promising to "harden" the southern U.S. border while reviving his proposal for a guest-worker program critics say is a form of amnesty. "The American people should not have to choose between a welcoming society and a lawful society," Bush told border security personnel gathered at an Air Force base. "We can have both at the same time." Bush's speech came as Congress has begun to grapple with legislation to overhaul immigration laws. The issue has divided Republicans between those who want tougher border enforcement and businesses that rely on immigrant labor, many of which favor a guest worker program. By calling both for tougher border enforcement and a temporary worker program, the president signaled that he aimed to try to please both sides. Bush hopes to hire an additional 1,000 border patrol agents, increasing the total to about 12,500; deployment of advanced technology such as "drone" surveillance planes; and construction of physical barriers, including a 14-mile fence near San Diego. He also wants to adopt new border and interior enforcement laws would take into account the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. Bush said, that this would bring undocumented workers "out of the shadows" and allow them to work legally for several years at jobs that Americans did not want. Bush also said that he opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants.House leaders have indicated that they intend to pass a border crackdown bill before year's end and leave the issue of guest workers until later. The Senate appears more inclined to tackle both issues at once.

Mexico rejects US border fences. Experts said the migration trend would continue because of the huge wage gap between the US and Mexico. Bush countered that in the rural areas, barriers preventing the free flow of vehicles from Mexico into the US were to go up.

I'm going to join the "fair reporting" band wagon and let everybody know that I voted for Bush, and no I'm not some ultra-conservative. Bush gave this speech from an Air Force base in Tucson. I can see the connection between Arizona and the US Border but why an Air Force base? It seems lately all of Bush's speeches are at military bases, are these the only groups that will listen to him? • Rice defends CIA prisons, from Reuters. Condoleezza Rice reassured European allies on Thursday that treatment of detainees was within international law. Rice said the United States had done nothing unlawful but stressed that governments could not afford to be more open on issues such as detention and movement of suspects, saying intelligence matters could not be made public. Rice repeated her defense of U.S. practices at a dinner late on Wednesday for NATO and EU foreign ministers on the eve of a one-day NATO meeting. Several ministers emerged satisfied after what a source described as a frank but respectful exchange. A senior U.S. State Department officials said ministers had avoided pressing Rice on specific questions about alleged U.S. practices, such as running secret prisons in Europe, and had instead sought assurances about the treatment of detainees. This issue has dogged her European tour, with reports in the media the CIA has run secret prisons in east Europe and covertly transported detainees in its war against terrorism. Rights groups say incommunicado detention often leads to torture. Rice sought to deflect criticism of U.S. policy before leaving for Europe on Monday, saying that European intelligence agencies had helped Washington extract information from suspects and urging allies to see "we are all in this together". In Kiev on Wednesday she announced that the United States had explicitly banned its interrogators around the world from treating detainees inhumanely, a policy shift made several weeks ago but not spelled out by a top official until Wednesday. The New York-based campaign group Human Rights Watch said in a statement the policy shift was inadequate because she failed to address allegations the CIA runs secret prisons or ruled out certain interrogation techniques, such as waterboarding.

• New Orleans re-opens it's first public school and Zoo since Hurricane Katrina, from San Diego Union Tribune and Los Angeles Times. Ben Franklin Elementary School opened last week, with about 200 students expected on the first day. Before Katrina, the school was a math-science magnet school with 390 students from preschool through eighth grade. The school was choosen because it was located in a relatively unscathed section of New Orleans. Some private schools in New Orleans began reopening in October, but no public schools had opened, with the exception of a few charters that were outside the local board's control.
  Thousands of people, some in tears, streamed into the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans as it opened for the first time since Hurricane Katrina struck in August. Most of the zoo's animals are fine. Two otters and a raccoon did not survive the hurricane. About 600 workers were laid off. The reopening was so emotional for many visitors that the zoo decided to post huggers at the front gates.

• Gay weddings become law in UK, from BBC NEws. Under the new law, couples who want to form a partnership must register their intentions with local councils. The legislation requires that every authority must offer a civil partnership. The basic level of that is a simple signing of a register. Unlike marriages, the signing of the legal partnership papers does not need to happen in public. The first ceremonies under the Civil Partnerships Act can take place in Northern Ireland on 19 December, followed by Scotland the next day and England and Wales on 21 December.

• Girl with peanut allergy dies after kiss, from the Toronto Sun. A fifteen-year-old girl with a peanut allergy died a few days after being kissed by her boyfriend who had eaten peanut butter. The girl was given a shot of Adrenaline shortly after the kiss, officials said. In case you didn't know: Adrenaline is used to treat anaphylactic shock brought on by a certain allergies.

• Adam Curry Caught in Sticky Wiki, from the Workbench blog. and lots of other blogs too. This has been all over the blog-o-sphere recently and has now made it into the papers and online news sources. It looks like Adam Curry has been caught anonymously editing the podcasting entry on Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that allows visitors to edit articles, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia to remove credit from other people and inflate his role in its creation. When someone edits Wikipedia without logging in the IP address is recorded to guard against abuse. Four times this year, an IP address controlled by Curry, has made revisions involving the early history of podcasting. This is not the first time there has been an editing controversy over a Wikipedia article.

The News

• Face Transplant, from the Sydney Morning Herald and the Toronto Star. A new face, and a new life for victim of a dog attack. The 38-year-old woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was mauled by a dog in May. Doctors say the recipient of the world's first face transplant will resemble her own former appearance more closely than that of the dead woman whose face she has received. "We expect the bone structure underneath to be a more powerful delineator of what the outcome will be physically than the skin and the nose and the lips. "She still has her own eyes, which are a lot of a person's expression … we'd expect she'd turn out to be a pleasant-looking girl", Surgeons continued. The surgery team took four months to find a reasonable match, looking for characteristics such as age, tissue type, blood group and skin coloring, for the graft. The recipient will have a fine seam of scars due to the procedure. A face transplant was the only option of restoring an acceptable appearance for the recipient, because plastic surgery could not have restored mobility to her features. Although she will be on anti-rejection drugs for the rest of her life, the only realistic alternatives were "multiple burdensome reconstructions or a life of social isolation.

• State's terrorism bill passed in day, from the Sydney Morning Herald. I have been reporting on Australia's debate and passing of several "National Security" bills and amendments, the most recent one passed the State of New South Wales upper house this week. This terrorism bill, would allow police to lock people up for up to 14 days without charging them. The Premier of New South Wales approved the bill at the state parliamentary press gallery Christmas party. Part of the bill would ensuring that detainees aged between 16 and 18 would not be held with adults.

• Pentgon Paids for News, from the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. There are reports that the Pentagon is secretly paying Iraqi papers to print positive coverage. Many of the articles are presented in the Iraqi press as unbiased news accounts written and reported by independent journalists. The stories trumpet the work of U.S. and Iraqi troops, denounce insurgents and tout U.S.-led efforts to rebuild the country. Defense Department officials in Baghdad said the program is necessary to provide factual information to Iraqis. Though the articles are basically factual, they present only one side of events and omit information that might reflect poorly on the U.S. or Iraqi governments, officials said. The operation is designed to mask any connection with the U.S. military. One of the companies involved _ the Washington-based Lincoln Group _ has at least two contracts with the military to provide media and public relations services. One contract, for $6 million, was for public relations and advertising work in Iraq and involved planting favorable stories in the Iraqi media, according to a document. Some of Lincoln Group's work in Iraq is very public, such as an animated public service campaign on Iraqi television that spotlights the Iraqi civilians killed by roadside bombs planted by insurgents. This is the second time this year that Pentagon programs have come under scrutiny for reported payments made to journalists for favorable press.

• Xbox 360 consoles Sold Out in the UK, consumers angry, from the BBC News, The Scotsman and Times Online, UK. Many retailers have warned that patrons may be disappointed as most shops have already pre-sold all of their stock due to limited supplies. Some shoppers have stood in line for up to 26 hours. Stores and consumers complained that Microsoft had dramatically underestimated demand for the new machines. Neil Thompson, head of Xbox in the UK, denied that Microsoft had let fans down by failing to provide enough consoles ahead of Christmas. "We are working 24 hours a day with the factories and chartering every plane and ship we can, but demand is exceptionally strong and there are times when people won't get it when they want it," he said. It is reported that the console sold out quickly here in the US when it was released last week. Machines are now appearing on eBay for inflated prices.

• Author Stan Berenstain dead at 82, from United Press International. Stan Berenstain passed away this week. Stand and Jan Berenstain met in a drawing class at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art and married years later in 1946. The couple's first Berenstain Bears book, "The Big Honey Hunt," was purchased in the early 1960s for Random House by editor Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Stan Berenstain is survived by his wife, two sons, four grandchildren and a sister.
  When I came across this article I was shocked and saddened by this news. I have fond memories of reading the Berenstains' books as a child and to my children. He will be missed.
  

• This is a folow up to my report on the TSA reveiwing their sharp object ban. It's interesting that I reported this on show 9. I referenced the Chicago Tribune for this segement. Transportation Security Administration is expected to make an anouncement soon regarding airline passengers carry small scissors. "They're trying to shift from shaking down little old ladies with scissors and knitting needles to looking at what the real threats are," said Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), chairman of the House Transportation Committee's aviation panel. "Explosives are my major concern.

The News

• TSA considers new rules for US passengers, from The Associated Press and KTUU. New security changes could be on the way for airports around the country. The Transportation Security Administration is looking into whether or not prohibited items can be carried back on planes. Penny Otto, a customer support manager with TSA says they are now looking into whether or not passengers can once again carry small pocket knives, scissors and other items. TSA says they are considering these changes because there are other security measures in place. For example, cockpit doors are now fortified. It's still unknown, however, if and when the changes will take place. These are changes that would require retraining airport screeners, but Otto says, for now, the old rules still apply. In order to help speed up the lines, TSA has placed a holiday list at all the check in counters. The list reminds people not to bring lighters, not to wrap gifts and not to check in film, instead, put it in the carry on luggage.

  I guess this would go along with the TSA's lack of cargo security. It seems to me that TSA is focusing more on passenger security than other types of security so that it looks like they are doing something productive. For the cargo security article see this Associated Press link.

• CIA Leak Prosecutor to Go to New Grand Jury, from the Spokesman Review. Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said recently that he plans to present new evidence to another federal grand jury. Recently investigators questioned Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward for two hours after learning that a senior administration official revealed Valerie Plame's identity to him in mid-June 2003. Lawyers involved in the case expect the prosecutor to focus on Woodward's admission that an official other than Libby told him about Plame one month before her identity was publicly disclosed in a July 14, 2003, column by Robert Novak.

• Peru seizes alleged drugs kingpin, from BBC News. Police in Peru have arrested a former airline owner whom the United States accuses of being a "drugs kingpin". Fernando Zevallos is suspected of cocaine trafficking, murder and witness tampering, Peru's state attorney for drugs crimes said. Mr Zevallos was placed on a US list of suspected drugs traffickers in June of last year. Mr Zevallos has previously been accused of trafficking cocaine, laundering money, tampering with witnesses and ordering murder, but has never been convicted. The latest arrest appears to be linked to the trial of drugs trafficker Jorge Chavez, reportedly an enforcer for Mr Zevallos. Mr Chavez pleaded guilty to drugs charges in Miami 10 years ago and became an undercover informant. The US Drug Enforcement Administration says it has launched more than 30 investigations into Mr Zevallos. He insists he is the victim of character assassination, overzealous US drug agents and business rivals.

• Here's another Hurricane. The record-setting 2005 hurricane season officially comes to a close on Wednesday. Tropical Storm Delta is making sure it ends with a bang. Delta, the 25th named storm of the season, is a strong tropical storm, with sustained winds just below hurricane status. No other tropical systems are looming in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific basins. From the Weather Channel.

• "How Brave Are You?" from The Indianapolis Star. There are plans to open, in 2007, a glass bridge 70 feet over the Grand Canyon. The Skywalk glass bridge will have five-foot glass walls on each side of the cantilever-shaped bridge, and the floor will be several inches of glass. The Las Vegas firm that engineered Skywalk says it can sustain winds exceeding 100 mph and an 8.0 earthquake within 50 miles. Skywalk is being built by the Hualapai Indian tribe that owns a million acres of land in and around the canyon's western rim. The "glass bridge" will protrude off Eagle's Point, which also will have a high-end restaurant called the Skywalk Café and a visitors center. How cool!!

• Talk about Irony! Las Vegas Monorail Carries it's 10 Millionth Passenger, from Business Wire. Paul Savoia, a visitor to Las Vegas from Ontario, Canada, won a lifetime pass to ride free on the Las Vegas Monorail after he was picked as the 10 millionth passenger since the monorail began running 15 months ago. Savoia also won a golf shirt, a two-night stay at the Sahara Hotel and two tickets to a Barry Manilow concert and the car collection at the Imperial Palace.

The News

• Case against Sydney Terrorist, from The Sydney Morning Herald. When police raided the Sydney home of Mazen Touma they found boxes and boxes of ammunition for shotguns to rifles to handguns. 165 railway detonators, explosives designed to sit on the tracks and explode when a train runs over them. Police alleged the eight Sydney suspects had ordered and bought explosives, underwent terrorist training on two sprawling country stations outside Bourke, and had scoped out potential targets, including possibly the nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights. The police statement sets out a pattern of chemical ordering and buying, weapons stockpiling, meetings, hunting trips and telephone calls, climaxing in late October, when, police alleged, there was a conspiracy to make explosives, specifically triacetone triperoxide, the material used in the London bombings. Touma came under police notice when he was stopped "in the vicinity" of the nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights almost a year ago in the company of other terror suspects. The police case also includes information on alleged secret meetings between the Sydney men, often arranged in the early hours using text messages on mobile phones bought in false names. Before these meetings, "members would engage in anti-surveillance" and when surveillance was discovered often the meetings were cancelled.

   

• Airlines could be the front line for the bird flu, from Reuters. Airlines could be on the front lines in a bird flu outbreak and federal health officials are streamlining procedures for the possible quarantine of sick passengers. But some airline workers and health experts see shortfalls in planning and recommend additional steps they say could save lives and help a financially fragile industry fly through a potential nightmare. The Bush administration hopes quick action can contain any U.S. outbreak and has not ruled out travel restrictions. Federal health officials have authority to detain or isolate any airline passenger suspected of harboring the avian flu virus, which scientists fear could mutate to leap from person to person and quickly spread globally. The H5N1 virus is entrenched in poultry flocks in much of Asia. It has infected more than 120 people, killing at 64 people in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia in two years.

  While I think it's important to take percautions to protect people I think the bird flu "epidemic" is being overblown. 257 died in the US in 2001 from the "normal" flu. This article states 64 people have died in the last two years from the bird flu. Almost 62,000 people in the US died of pneumonia in 2001 and yet we don't hear about pneumonia quarantines and airline precautions. I'll shut up now.

• Western New York's first snow enough to shut some schools, from Newsday. The season's first snowstorm shut down more than a dozen suburban schools Thursday and challenged drivers, the area recieve 1.5 feet of snow. Town officials in Elma and Hamburg advised no unnecessary travel just in time for the morning commute, while schools there and in Orchard Park and Attica closed. Several cars were reported off the road throughout the hardest-hit areas. The morning's freezing temperatures were in sharp contrast to the 69 degrees recorded shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday, tying a 1955 record. But by 8 p.m. Wednesday, the temperature had plunged _ for the first time this season _ to freezing at the National Weather Service's airport office. Here in my part of Texas an inch of snow or ice shuts everything down.

• Baby panda at the San Diego Zoo recieved a present to celebrate her 100-day birthday: a name, from The San Jose Mercury News. Zoo officials announced Thursday the cub will be called Su Lin. The name, one of five options in an online poll, means "a little bit of something very cute" in Chinese, according to the zoo. Su Lin, which got 44 percent of the more than 70,000 votes cast, also was the name of the first giant panda brought to the United States in 1936. The five names were submitted by the zoo's Giant Panda Team and approved by the People's Republic of China, which owns Su Lin and her parents, Bai Yun, the zoo's adult female, and Gao Gao, the adult male. Su Lin still has trouble standing and has not yet left her den. The 10-pound ball of fur can be seen by the public on the zoo's Panda Cam. She is the third panda born at the zoo. Her brother, Mei Sheng, which means "Born in the USA," remains there. The zoo's first cub, Hua Mei, which means "China USA," has since returned to China and became a mother.The Pandas at the San Diego Zoo are part of a 12-year research loan from China.

• Just in time for the holidays: SHOPPING!, The New York Times. As you may know, for retailers, the day after Thanksgiving is a highly orchestrated affair. According to the article, prices are scientifically slashed, down to the penny. Sales begin at dawn. And glossy circulars containing the well-laid plans are distributed just a day or two ahead to give us gullible shopper something to drool over. Can you tell how I feel about this subject?!? This year there are serveral online services, such as BF2005.com, where you can view leaked advertisements weeks in advance. So far this year, sources have leaked advertisements to him from Kohls listing 7" Portable Widescreen LCD TV regularly $169.99 for $119.99, Toys "R" Us showing the Barbie Fashion Show Mall, regularly $99.99, for $29.97, or Ace Hardware which is advisering a Skil 12-volt drill regularly $44.99, for $24.99. Sites like BF2005.com say their motive is to educate consumers. But retailers are furious, arguing that the site jeopardizes their holiday business, and they have threatened legal action. Micheal Brim, who runs BF2005.com, hopes that by these online sites that "even the average Joe can become a professional bargain hunter."

  
  

• A 1,200-Year-Old Murder Mystery in Guatemala, from The New York Times. Archaeologists and forensic experts in Guatemala have made a grisly discovery among the ruins of an ancient Maya city. In explorations during the summer, they found as many as 50 skeletons in a sacred pool and other places, victims of murder and dismemberment in a war that destroyed the city and, it seems, served as a beginning of the collapse of the classic period of the Maya civilization. The decline of the Maya is one of the enduring mysteries of American archaeology. Around A.D. 800, the conquerors methodically destroyed the palace and monuments and rounded up the king and queen of Cancuén and members of the court, men, women and children. They killed them en masse, mostly by lance thrusts and ax blows to the neck or head. Most of their mutilated bodies were dumped into the palace pool or buried in shallow graves. According to the article this was not the typical MO for warring Mayan groups, which usually spared a city to rule it as a vassal state.

• Dolphin born at Zoo, from The Chicago Tribune. Brookfield Zoo, Near Chicago Ill. today introduced one of its newest residents, a female baby dolphin born in the zoo on November 3rd. The as-yet unnamed calf was born to Tapeko, a 23-year-old Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. DNA tests confirmed the father is Hastings, another resident dolphin at the Brookfield zoo. The baby dolphin is 3 feet long, weighs about 30 to 35 pounds and appears healthy and strong, officials said. A zoo spokeswoman said it probably would be several months before a name is chosen for the newborn. Its birth followed the loss of a dolphin fetus that had been carried by Kaylee, a 12-year-old Brookfield Zoo dolphin who coincidentally is Tapeko's daughter. Tapeko's pregnancy was confirmed in January and closely monitored by the zoo's veterinary staff, officials said. Routine ultrasound exams were conducted with the dolphin's cooperation during the 12-month gestation. (That's a LONG time to be pregnant!!!) Zoo pictures.

The News

• Paris on lockdown, from CNN. Bans on public gatherings and 3,000 police patrolling key locations a day after blogs and text messages where sent calling for violent action. Police state it had been at least a decade and possibly longer since authorities had imposed any similar ban on gatherings in the French capital. Several hours after the emergency procedures where put in place there were no reports of trouble. The unrest in France has weakened in intensity, but still continues, since the government declared a state-of-emergency Tuesday, empowering local authorities to invoke exceptional security measures such as curfews if deemed necessary.

• British man "shakes" off HIV virus, from the BBC News. No he didn't dance the virus at of his system. A British man, who was infected with the HIV virus in 2002, has tested negative twice in an 18 month period for the virus. There has been anecdotal evidence of the same thing happening in Africa but there has been no scientific proof to support it. This is first well documented case of an infected person becoming rid of the virus. This case is important because inside this man's immune system is perhaps a key that could allow scientist to develop some kind of vaccine. Specialists caution that more testing is needed.

• Man shot at screening of the new 50 Cent movie, from the BBC News. A man was killed at a theater after the screening of "Get Rich or Die Tryin" which stars rapper 50 Cent. The man was shot during a argument between four people. The argument began in the Mens bathroom spilled out into the lobby. The man who was shot was also carrying a gun.

  Interesting that I only found international sources for this event. I found plenty of US articles about 50 cents comments to the incident but very little about the actually shooting.

• McCartney gives live space concert, from the BBC News and CNN. Paul McCartney becomes the first musician to broadcast live music to a space audience. The former Beatles member treated two astronauts at the international space station to a live wake-up call with the Beatles song Good Day Sunshine. The performance was broadcast to the crew, 220 miles (350 km) above Earth, from a concert in California. McCartney decided to broadcast his concert after he found out that NASA used the song to wake up the Space Shuttle crew. "I was extremely proud to find out that one of my songs was played for the crew of Discovery this summer, "McCartney stated on his website.
  A live feed of NASA television was played at the concert showing the two astronauts bobbing up and down and sipping juice from squeeze pouches throughout the show, getting a rousing cheer from the audience. "I can't believe that we're actually transmitting to space!" McCartney said during the concert. "This is sensational. I love it." The two astronauts enjoyed the break in their six-month flight.

• Sony stops making anti-piracy CDs, from the BBC News. Sony stated that it will stop production of music CDs with the Sony anti-piracy technology embedded in them. Sony has received criticism over their embedded software which uses a rootkit to hide it's presence and to report user activities back to Sony. Hackers have started exploiting the software to create viruses that will evade detection by anti-virus programs and infect computers. Sony defends their software by saying it had a right to stop people illegally copying music, but added that the halt was precautionary. "We also intend to re-examine all aspects of our content protection initiative to be sure that it continues to meet our goals of security and ease of consumer use," the company said in a statement. The stealth technique to hide the Sony software on computers was discovered in late October. The music CDs with the sleath software are only being sold in the US. Anti-virus companies have found at least three viruses that take advantage of the Sony software.There are at least six class-action lawsuits have been started against the company.   I think that no matter how Sony spins this they stop using the embedded software because of all the negative criticism it received and the possibility of litigation due to their alleged negligence.
  

• Is the world nuts!?! Boy band incites riot at local mall, from CNN News. Police shut down a mall in Minnesota after 2000 fans rushed the boy band B5 on stage at a free concert. Fans overwhelmed a small security guard team and grabbed at band members' clothing. The band had only made it to the second song when the chaos broke out and girls began rushing the stage. Five people were treated at the scene and four others were taken to a local hospital for injuries. According to police, no arrests were made. The event was sponsored by a local Radio Disney radio station.

• As if we don't have enough SPAM in our in-boxes, there is a new urban myth chain email going around about The Catholic League boycotting Wal-Mart stores. The Catholic league did call a boycott and then canceled it two days later after Wal-Mart changed it's online website. You can read the full article at Snopes.com.

The News

• France plans to deport foreign rioters, from BBC News. Interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy has ordered the expulsion of 120 foreigners, including those who have residency visas, found guilty of involvement in the riots that have swept France for 13 nights. Police said the violence had fallen significantly, although there is still trouble in more than 100 towns. The government has declared a state of emergency in Paris and more than 30 other areas to help stop the unrest. The northern city of Amiens was the first to impose an overnight curfew under the new powers, which came into force at midnight. Nearly three out of four French people support the powers, according to a poll published in the daily Le Parisien newspaper. The emergency powers handed to local authorities have been invoked under a 1955 law. This is the first time they have been implemented in mainland France.

• Australian terrorist suspects had material for 15 bombs, from Stuff Zealand. The Sydney arm of the alleged Islamic terrorist group raided this week had stockpiled enough chemicals to make at least 15 large bombs to be used against selected targets, police say. The chemicals were the type freely available at hardware stores, a replica of the formula used to make the bombs that killed 52 people - and four suicide bombers - in the attacks in London on July 7, senior investigators say. Police decided to stage this week's raids on dozens of properties in Sydney and Melbourne because they believed the Sydney suspects were so advanced they could have produced bombs within days.

• Student shoots assistant principal, from the Chicago Sun-Times, ABC News, and CNN. A student shot and killed an assistant principal and seriously wounded two other administrators at a high school, Tuesday, 30 miles from Knoxville Tennessee. The student, a freshman, was called to the office because other students had seen him with a gun on campus. When the principal and two assistant principals began questioning the boy, he allegedly opened fire. No students were hurt. Despite his injury, the principal managed to get to the intercom and order a lockdown, helping to end the incident, authorities said. The student is being held without bond in a juvenile detention facility in Knoxville and could have an initial court appearance in the next few days. A judge ultimately will decide whether he should be tried as a juvenile or an adult.

• New trial for Andrea Yates, from CNN. You may remember Yates was found guilty of drowning her 5 children in her Houston Texas home in 2002. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, upheld a lower court's decision that overturned Yates' convictions this week. In January, the lower appeals court found that an expert prosecution witness, Dr. Park Dietz, presented false testimony. Dietz told jurors Yates may have been influenced by a "Law & Order" episode, but the episode did not exist.The prosecution is considering another trial, but before they do, they need to decide if she is mentally competent to stand trial. Yates' attorney hopes she will be sent to a mental health facility rather than prison.

• Blair defeated over terror laws, from BBC News. Tony Blair says his authority is intact despite suffering his first House of Commons defeat as prime minister. He said he hoped MPs "do not rue the day" they rejected his call to allow police to detain terror suspects for up to 90 days without charging them. MPs voted against, 322 votes to 291. Mr Blair told the BBC he did not believe the vote would affect his position as prime minister.

• Venus probe launched successfully, BBC News and CNN. Europe's first space mission to Venus has begun its five-month voyage to our closest neighbor. Venus Express lifted off on a Russian rocket last Wednesday. The spacecraft will orbit Venus to study its atmosphere, which has experienced runaway greenhouse warming. Scientists hope the two-year mission will shed further light on the mechanisms of climate change on our own world. "Initial checks are ongoing and everything looks good," said Paolo Ferri, deputy flight operations director for Venus Express.

• Dog Gives Birth To Green Puppy, from the The Boston Channel. A golden retriever puppy, one of four, was born to a dog in California last week. He was born with green fur. Veterinarians said that it's possible for a newborn's fur to be green because the placenta, which is green, sometimes rubs off at birth. His owners have named him Wasabi.

The News

• French riots claim first fatality, from CNN.com and The Los Angeles Times. A man was beaten to death by an attacker during rioting north of Paris, becoming the first fatality since urban unrest started 11 days ago, according to the French Foreign Ministry. The man was beaten as he tried to put out a trash can fire on Friday in the suburb of Stains. In the last 11 days the disturbances have spread around the country among disaffected youths, mostly of Muslim or African origin, to become France's worst civil unrest in over a decade. More than 4,300 vehicles have been burned since the riots began. The spreading violence has shocked national leaders and community residents into action, with mediators and religious leaders talking to the youths in an effort to stop the violence. French Muslim groups also issued a fatwa against the violence, according to Reuters news agency. The Union of French Islamic Organizations (UOIF) condemned the disorder and destruction the riots had caused. Fears were also growing Monday that the unrest could take hold elsewhere in Europe. Five cars have been torched in both Brussels and Berlin and police said they were they were investigating as if they were copycat attacks.

• Tornado Slams Southern Indiana Killing 23, from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Reuters. A tornado with winds exceeding 158 mph tore a path of devastation through western Kentucky and southern Indiana as residents slept very early Sunday morning, reducing dozens of mobile homes to splinters and turning entire blocks of buildings into rubble, killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 200. In Kentucky, the Ellis Park racetrack suffered major damage. The grandstand was ripped away, several barns were damaged and at least three horses were killed. Some 25,000 people were left without power because of the storm, which government weather officials said was the worst to hit the state in 17 years. Alarm sirens sounded only about 10 minutes before the twister hit. Such severe tornadoes are rare in the U.S. Midwest in November, according to the National Storm Prediction Center. Peak tornado season is generally from April through June. On average, tornadoes kill about 70 people annually in the United States. The single deadliest tornado in U.S. history killed 689 people in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana in March 1925, according to the storm prediction center.

• Cruise Ship Survives Pirate Attack, from The Sydney Morning Herald and The San Diego Union-Tribune. Pirates attacked a luxury cruise ship off the north-east coast of Somalia Saturday morning, November 5th. None of the 151 passengers aboard the Seabourn Spirit were injured in the assault, although one crewman was hit by shrapnel and the ship sustained minor damage. The ship was en route from Egypt to Kenya when "all hell broke loose" stated one of the passengers. There is speculation that based on the location of the attack, that the pirates were from the same group that hijacked a U.N. chartered aid ship in June. The International Maritime Bureau has for several months warned ships to stay at least 150 miles away from Somalia's coast, citing 25 pirate attacks in those waters since March 15 compared with just two for all of 2004.

• Police Conduct Largest Raid in Australian History, from The Sydney Morning Herald. Two days after passing the emergency terrorism amendment, which I spoke about in show 4, the New South Wales and Victoria State Police with the Australian Federal Police mounted a series of raids, the biggest in Australia's history. The security forces seized weapons and chemicals similar to those used to make the London Underground bombs. The police claim to have interrupted a terrorist attempt. At least one suspect was shot and critically injured after he, allegedly, opened fire on the police.
  The police released video footage taken before and during the morning raids in Sydney, including infrared images shot from a police helicopter tracking a fleeing suspect as he apparently sought to hide behind trees. You can see the video and pictures at The Sydney Morning Herald website. Thanks again Tom for pointing this out to me.

• On to some more happier news... Harry Potter premiere in London, and the fans "Goblet all up" according to the Melbourne Herald Sun. Thousands of fans braved the rain to catch a glimpse of the teen aged starts. Goblet of Fire cost an estimated $130 million to $170 million, but will probably earned a profit since the first three movies earned around $2.5 billion at the box office.
  The film is the fourth in the Harry Potter series and tells the story of Harry's battle against older rivals in a Triwizard Tournament, his budding first love and his confrontation with nemesis Lord Voldemort. British director Mike Newell said he wanted to re-create the atmosphere he remembered when at school. "What I tried quite consciously to do was to make a movie which was entertaining for adults as much as it was for children. I knew there would be a lot of parents in there with nine-year-olds," he said. Goblet of Fire is 2.5 hours and will be released in the US on November 18th.

The News

• Riots in Paris, from the Detroit Free Press, Rioting continues for the eighth day in the suburbs of the Paris, France as ministers hold talks to end the violence. The riots started last Thursday after the electrocution deaths of two teenagers who ran from a soccer game and hid in a power station in the northeastern suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois after they saw police enter the area. Youths in the neighborhood said police chased the boys to their death.
  French authorities have said that officers were investigating a suspected burglary and not pursuing the boys, a view backed up by an interim report by the national police inspectors office released Thursday.
  By Wednesday night, the violence had spread to at least 20 Paris-region towns, said a government official for the region north of Paris. He said youths in the region fired four shots at riot police and firefighters but caused no injuries.
  The unrest has highlighted the division between France's big cities and their poor suburbs, with frustration simmering in the housing projects in areas marked by high unemployment, crime and poverty.

• Terror threat sparks new law, from The Courier-Mail. An emergency terror law was pushed quickly through the House of Representatives last night to stop a suspected Sydney-based group launching attacks across Australia. The law was rushed into Parliament with bi-partisan support to enable authorities to take urgent action against the undisclosed threat. The law, was passed in the form of an amendment separte from the Anti-Terrorism Bill, broadens the definition of an act of terrorism. Prime Minister John Howard said the change was needed to strengthen the capacity of authorities to deal with the serious threat, which had emerged in the past week. The full Bill gives police unprecedented powers to question, detain and control suspected terrorists.But the Prime Minister refused to provide any detail on the nature of the threat, claiming it could compromise sensitive operational matters. Australia has been struck by terrorism and Australians are concerned with the threat and want to know the government is doing something about it but there are concerns that the government may be going too far with the new laws. • Thousands attend funeral for Rosa Parks, CBC World News and The New York Times. In tribute to Mrs. Parks the first row on hundreds of Detroit buses sat empty. A white hearse carried Parks' body from the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History where the viewing had been held to Detroit's Greater Grace Temple. Hours before the funeral began, the line to get one of the 2,000 available public seats at the church extended more than two blocks west in Parks' adopted hometown. Former president Bill Clinton, his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Rev. Al Sharpton where some of the dignitaries whom attended. Parks will be entombed in Woodlawn Cemetery, with her husband and mother.

• CIA accused over secret jails for terror suspects, from The Washington Post. The CIA is being accused of hiding and interrogating some 30 al-Qaeda captives in covert prisons in several Eastern European democracies and other countries. Referred to in classified documents as "black sites." Only Top US officials are even aware of the sites. Virtually nothing is known about who is kept in the facilities, what interrogation methods are employed with them, or how decisions are made about whether they should be detained or for how long.

• Bush Nominates Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court, from The Houston Chronicle and The Globe and Mail. President Bush has choosen Samuel Alito, of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The 55-year-old New Jersey native is a Princeton and Yale Law School graduate, and has served as a federal prosecutor. He was nominated to the federal bench by President Bush in 1990 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate. Based on previous rulings Alito favors the Right to Life Movement.

   

• Canada to review immigration policy, from the Australian Financial Review. Canada revealed changes to its immigration policy, including plans to take in as many as 300,000 new immigrants annually within the next five years. Canada is on track to accept 245,000 immigrants this year, the high end of last year's target. A multiyear plan was presented to parliament on Monday, it still needs cabinet approval. Immigration minister Joe Volpe says there are more jobs in Canada than the labor market has workers for.Volpe wants to bring in more workers on temporary visas to fill positions in the trades - such as pipefitters and truck drivers. Canada issues about 95,000 such visas a year.

• Bloodthirsty 'Vampire' Spider Found, from The Discovery Channel News. A small East African jumping spider has a taste for blood, according to a recent study. The spider, Evarcha culicivora, lacks the ability to pierce skin and to sip blood, so instead it feeds indirectly on blood by choosing, female mosquitoes that have just engorged themselves with a victim's blood. The spider uses a rather clever technique for catching the fat female mosquitoes. The spider stalks the mosquito like a cat, and then pounces either on top or underneath the mosquito before taking a bite.

• Albanian Surplus Jet Fighters, from Big News.com. Albania’s entire air force of Russian-designed MiG jets is being retired. Citing old age and an inability to pay for fuel as reasons for the mothballing the jets. In their 50 years of use the jets have killed 35 Albanian pilots and zero enemies. This was taken from a semi-regular column on weird news so if you like it you may want to check them out.

• The Force Is with IP, from ComputerWorld and eWeek Cisco put a router into space as part of its Cisco Low Earth Orbit (CLEO) project, which recently completed its second year orbiting Earth. Cisco says the project is a proof-of-concept exercise designed to show the aerospace industry that commercial IP technology is space-worthy.

• Harriet Miers, the US Supreme Court nominee steps down, BBC News . The Texas lawyer nominated to the US Supreme Court by President George W Bush, Harriet Miers, has withdrawn as a nominee to the court. Miers, who has served as White House counsel for Mr Bush but has no judicial experience, has come in for criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. Democrat opponents accused the president of favoritism, pointing to personal memos sent during Mr Bush's days as governor of Texas as evidence that her friendship with the president was her chief qualification for the job. Republicans were sceptical of Ms Miers' suitability for the court on ideological grounds. The president said he would fill the Supreme Court seat, due to be vacated by Sandra Day O'Connor, in "a timely manner".

• Smoking Ban in England, from Bloomberg.com. Smoking will be banned in offices, restaurants and pubs serving food in England starting mid 2007 if the bill is passed. Pubs that don't server food and private clubs will be exempt. The term food is ill defined in the bill as is causing confusion among members of the British Beer and Pub Association. New York and California already have barred smoking in public places, as have Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Norway, Finland, Sweden and Italy have restricted the practice during the past few years.

• Scotland's answer to Rome's Colosseum, from Scotsman.com. PLANS for Scotland's spectacular £62 million national arena were unveiled recently. Based on Rome's Colosseum, it will rise 148 feet with a dome measuring 394 feet across. It will be clad in translucent material that allows it to glow in the dark. The Colosseum is due to open in 2009. The arena, will seat 12,500, the same as London's Wembley Arena, and will be dedicated to entertainments events such as concerts and theatrical performances. The Colosseum is being built by the management group of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). The Colosseum will be linked to the Glasgow, via Glasgow Harbour, and by a light, rapid tram system. Roads around the SECC will be restructured to accommodate traffic flow, including the new Finnieston bridge. Steven Purcell, the leader of Glasgow City Council, said the arena would make the city even more attractive to conference organisers and events promoters.
  

• Small town in Georgia is hoping to make bankrupt tourist attraction pay off, from the The Winston-Salem Journal, Dawsonville, Georgia has turned a failed tourist attraction for racing fans into the Dawsonville's City Hall. Since Thunder Road, the name of the attraction, was miles from the nearest highway, the $12 million attraction closed less than three years after its 2002 opening. After a bank foreclosure, this town of 700 bought the property at a bargain and took over the back offices as its headquarters. Town officials hope that the $2.5 million investment pays off. The city is promoting the exhibits that remain as the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. City meetings are held in a whitewashed back room designed to field an IMAX theater. The buildings are used for Boy Scout meetings and even hosted a wedding. The arrangement is not permanent, the city is hoping they can find the right tenants to lease the space. Already, a diner operates out of part of the 40,000-square-foot space and volunteers staff the remnants of the museum.

• India cuts Scotland's workforce, Hindustan Times.com, UK Edition. Thanks to the large scale of outsourcing of industrial activity to India and China, Scotland has lost almost a quarter of its manufacturing workforce in the last eight years. Long-established factories in Scotland have closed and industries have come under pressure to match the low cost of production available outside the UK. Glasgow has lost 13,000 manufacturing jobs since 1996-97.

• This next item is not actually breaking news but I thought it was interesting enough to include in today's news. Snake Explodes After Eating Aligator, from BBC News. A 13-foot (3.9m) Burnese python tried to eat a 6-foot (1.8m) alligator, neither animal surived. The aligator tried to claw it's way out causing the snake to explode. The remains of the two giant reptiles were found by astonished rangers in the Everglades National Park. The rangers say the find suggests that non-native Burmese pythons might even challenge alligators' leading position in the food chain in the swamps. The python's remains with the victim's tail protruding from its burst midsection were found last week.

• Jude Law's motorcycle tour of South America, from TeenToday. Law is to go on a motorcycle tour of South America "to escape" the aftermath of his break up with Sienna Miller - and has persuaded actor pal Ewan McGregor to go along for the ride. Law wants to follow the adventures of Che Guevara, featured in last year's hit movie 'The Motorcycle Diaries'.

• Tropical Storm Beta, the 23rd storm of this year. It is creeping around the western Caribbean and is forecasted to reach hurricane strength (category 2) and make landfall along the coast of northern Nicaragua by late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. 2005 is a record setting year for hurriannes and tropical storms, the next former record was 21 storms in the Atlantic basin and that was set in 1933. • Hurricane Wilma
  After Hurricane Wilma slammed into the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula this past weekend and pummeled the Florida coast it is now heading up the east coast of the US into Canada. This is from The Weather Channel. Winds are down to 115 mph with the forward motion up to 53 mph off to the north and east. Nova Scotia will receive heavy rains and surf. Bruce be careful!

• Rosa Parks Dies at 92, from The Boston Globe. Called "the mother of the civil rights movement," Parks' the Alabama seamstress whose soft-spoken refusal to give up a seat on a Montgomery, Ala., bus to a white person in the segregated South is thought to be the beginning of the public fight for equal rights.

• Arrests after riots rock the city of Birmingham, from The Scotsman.com. The riots started after the alleged rape of 14 year old black girl. A number of people where arrested after a night of rioting left a man dead and 35 injured as racial tensions boiled over. Shops were broken into, cars were set on fire during the clash. Assistant Chief Constable David Shaw, from West Midlands Police said there was "not a shred of evidence" to support the allegations that the girl had been subjected to a sexual assault, but investigations were continuing.
  
• 'No hope' for climbers buried by avalanche, from the Independent Online. Rescue workers say there is no hope of finding seven French and 11 Nepali climbers missing since an avalanche in western Nepal last week. Authorities here lost contact with the 21-member climbing team on Wednesday when an avalanche swept through their base camp on the 6 981m Mount Kangaru. Three Nepali climbers were rescued on Sunday, but no sign has been found of the others in the group. Those rescued survived because they were camped at a lower elevation.
  
• Frozen Soldier, from the Dallas Morning News, Two climbers discovered a frozen body believed to be a World War II airman in the Sierra Nevada wilderness last weekend. He was found wearing his Army-issued parachute and sweater. His skin and muscle have been well-preserved, as have the man's sun-bleached hair and his uniform, which identifies him as a World War II-era serviceman. Experts think that "There's a very good possibility for identification." The body went unfound for decades because the isolated mountainside in Kings Canyon National Park does not attract many visitors. The area can be reached by hiking two or three days, or by helicopter when the weather allows.
  
• MP Galloway challenges US senators, from the BBC News. George Galloway has rejected claims he lied under oath to the US Senate committee which accused him of receiving oil cash from Saddam Hussein. Galloway denies US senators' claims he lied under oath - and challenges them to charge him with perjury. The MP could face criminal charges if he is found to have given false testimony to the committee on 17 May.
